1. Advocacy on Access to Potable Water for Communities using a Rights Based Approach

 

AGGEM successfully carried out an advocacy project between 2009-2010 on the improvement of access to and enhanced community engagement in the provision of potable water for local communities in the Bamenda, North West Region of Cameroon. This following the local government decision interest to privatised the water supply sector for profit making. 

 

Using this experience where decisions were overturned in favour of poor communities using a Rights Based Approach, AGGEM’s team members have shared the experiences using this approach in promoting genuine respect of good governance principles and approaches to natural resources management and development. This experience had during the process and follow-up activities to evaluate the access to potable water by the local communities is being compiled for submission to a peer reviewed journal for publication. 

2. Enhancing access to water for Mukwebuh community

Project Summary:

 

GENERAL PURPOSE OF PROJECT: To promote community health and wellbeing in Mukwebuh and surrounding communities. 

 

SPECIFIC PURPOSES:

1. The Mukwebuh Water Catchment and its surroundings is improved to ensure sustainable water flows all season. 2. The infrastructure is developed to enhance access to water for drinking and other uses through all seasons for communities in and around Mukwebuh.

3. A surface level tank and water tower is constructed to enhance for effective management of the scarce resource. 4. Extend connections to at least 50 homes with priority for the most vulnerable households. (persons with special needs) and structures providing other basic services including a health centres, and two nursery and primary schools)

5. Separation of water for multipurpose (drinking and cooking, and laundry) through construction of appropriate infrastructure.

6. Develop and scale up a Community hygiene programme to protect drinking-water sources.
